Losar Tashi Delek.
As I send this email to you this wonderful Losar morning, I am sure
you are celebrating it with your loved ones – wishing each other the
very best. I certainly hope and pray that all you wished for yourself
and for your loved ones come true and that the joy this New Year
brings to you last for years and years to come.
I am writing to you, various community representative(s), about a
celebration event called Thank You Tibet to be held on Thursday, March
4, 2010, 7:00 PM, at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine in New York
City. Although you can read all about it on
http://thankyoutibet.org/index.html, to put it briefly, this is about
thanking His Holiness the Dalai Lama, Tibet and Tibetan people for
their contribution to the world. As unfortunate as it is to lose one’s
own country, many have benefited from the contributions of the
Tibetans in exile.
Organized by Peace Jam , Dalai Lama Center for Peace and Education,
Nobel Women’s Initiative and The Tibet Fund, this Thank You Tibet
celebration will feature Nobel Peace laureates Shirin Ebadi and Jody
Williams, celebrity artists Laurie Anderson, Philip Glass, John
Giorno, Bobby McFerrin, Robert Thurman, Lobsang Nyandak, Tibetan Monks
and Musicians including Tenzin Kunsel and excerpts from Kundun by
Martin Scorsese. The event will be hosted by Michael Imperioli and Ann
Curry (not me, fortunately – lol).
When many westerners, and for that matter, Americans, are thanking
Tibet, I thought why not our communities join them to demonstrate this
grateful gesture. Needless for me to say that many of us and many in
our communities have greatly benefited from the exiled Tibetans – be
it receiving teachings from His Holiness or other Rinpoches, going or
sending our relatives to Tibetan Monasteries or Tibetan Schools, etc.
etc. etc. . . Many of you and members of our communities, I’m sure,
have shown your gratitudes in your own way many times. But this
symbolic gesture, with our presence, and, pardon the way I put it, not
only white people, will mean a lot to not only the organizers and the
Tibetans but should be of a tremendous good feelings for us as well.
We, the Buddhist Community members, for our own benefit, have helped
fill Madison Square Garden, Jacob K. Javit Center, Radio City Music
Hall and Cathedral of St. John the Divine, when His Holiness gave
teachings in these locations. This March 4th, in His Holiness’
physical absence, I ask you all to come join and leave no seats empty
at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine, visualizing His Holiness’
presence there and thanking Him, Tibet and Tibetan people.
Because I have such a strong feeling that we the non-Tibetan Buddhists
and/or Himalayan Communities are just as thankful to Tibet as others
feel, I volunteered to get involved. But my involvement will mean
nothing if it wasn’t for your belief that you feel the same way. And
if you feel the same way as I do, it won’t amount to much if you are
not able to bring members of your communities to the event.
When I offered my assistance, I was asked to sell only – ONLY – 50
tickets. I had all of you, your communities and the members of your
communities in mind. I felt a bit insulted. When I expressed my
feelings, I was given 80 tickets. But, I know we can do more. Tickets
I have are only $20 each.
So, can you please think about this wonderful event Thank You Tibet
and let me know as soon as you can with your need of the tickets for
your community? Organizers have promised me more tickets if I see the
need. Let me know via email and I will make arrangements with you to
drop them off to you or mail them. Tickets can also be purchased at
http://www.stjohndivine.org/ThankYouTibet.html or by calling
866-811-4111. Tickets are $20, $30 and $75.
Not to insult your intelligence or your choice of entertainers, you or
the members of your community, may not find the performers to your
liking – although they are established and celebrities in their own
rights. More than anything else, this should be seen as showing our
gratitude to Tibet and Tibetan people for their contribution. For the
very symbolic reason. Tickets will go fast, there’s no worries to that
- but I wish to see many from our communities to come and say Thank
You.
One last thing…. This is not a fund raiser. So, please do not sell
tickets to people that don’t want to come or can’t come. I’d rather
see people who buy the tickets come to the event.
And with that, I await your responses, after you have a wonderful
Losar celebration. Once again, Losar Tashi Delek.
Sincerely,
Sonam G. Sherpa

PS – If you feel others in your community will also be able to help
us, please do forward this email.
