Minister for Local Development Honorable Purna Kumar Sherma held a meeting with Mr. Sha Zukang, Under-Secretary-General, Department of Economic and Social Affairs, United Nations today. During the meeting Honorable Minister Sherma highlighted the policies of the Government of Nepal to protect and promote the rights of the indigenous people including the completion of the preparation of National Plan of Action to implement the provisions of 169 ILO Conventions.
Under-Secretary-General Mr. Sha Zukang appreciated the active participation of Nepal in the UN Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues and expressed his readiness to work with the Government of Nepal on indigenous issues.
Honorable Sherma has arrived New York on 26 April 2010 leading the Nepalese delegation on UN Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues being held in New York from 19 – 30 April 2010.
In the meeting, Mr. Jitpal Kirant, Vice Chairman of the National Foundation for Development of Indigenous Nationalities, Mr. Shiv Bahadur Rayamajhi, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Local Development and Mr. Amrit B. Rai, Minister Counsellor, Permanent Mission of Nepal to the United Nations were also present.
