Press Release: A workshop on Save the Himalayas

A workshop on save the Himalayas was held at Lexington, KY (USA) during a joint conventions of the Association of Nepalese in Mid-West America (ANMA) and Nepalese Association in Southeast America (NASeA) joint convention in Lexington, Kentucky. The workshop was focused on the need of raising voice to save the Himalayas from the impact of on-going global climate change.

Recently, NRN National Coordination Council of USA (aka NRN America) signed a MOU with NTNC to host an awareness rally on September 22, 2010 in front of the United Nations while world leaders meet for annual UN summit. Summitter Mr. Ang Chiring Sherpa is coordinating the event while Tek Gurung and Dr. Binod Shah are the Co-Coordinators.

During the program, Mr. Angchiring Sherpa shared his experience and how different he saw the whole Himalayan range from the top of the world. He added how the global warming has threatened the eco system and if we don’t act now, impact could be far more serious than imagined. Dr. Binod Shah appealed everyone to join the upcoming rally and extend their support. He also appealed media for a larger collaboration and cooperation in this matter. Ambassador of Nepal to US Dr. Shankar P. Sharma extended warm support to such effort and added full cooperation from him and his office. He further added to help disseminating the news and awareness letter to fellow diplomats from other countries. Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Karma G. Sherpa, Mr. Tsewang Sherpa Lama, Dr. Tara Niraula and many other appealed everyone to come forward and join the rally. Dr. Tara Niraula also added that the Government of Nepal and its office of Permanent Representative must campaign to get attention of the Mountain Forum and other related groups of global leaders in the United Nations.

Mr. Suman R. Timsina moderated the event. He appealed leaders of Nepali community to take this message in their local community and generate a discussion and mobilize people. The proposed rally will be held at Dag Hammarskjold Plaza, 47th Street and 1st Avenue, Manhattan, New York on September 22, 2010 from Noon-4PM. Over 15 summitters and the officials of Nepal Government are also expected to join the awareness rally. A petition for worldwide signature will be made available on-line by September 9, 2010 and will be submitted to global leaders at the United Nations.
