Press Release

3rd NEAJA General Convention to be held in New York

NEAJA executive committee meeting held last week decided to hold the third general convention of Nepal America Journalists’ Association on the first weekend of May (05-06), 2012. NEAJA general secretary Angchhiring Sherpa would coordinate the event. The Convention would coincide the World Press Freedom Day which the United Nations has been observing for more than quarter century every year on May 3 to inform the international community that freedom of press and freedom of expression are fundamental human rights and to remind people that many journalists brave death or face jail to bring daily news to the public.

The meeting also formed a three-member Membership Verification Committee (MVC) to look into the membership issues and update the list of the NEAJA members. NEAJA treasurer Sahadev Poudel would coordinate to the MVC. Members of the MVC include NEAJA Mid-West region Vice-President Shekhar Dhungel and NEAJA executive member Bishwo Thapa.

The meeting also decided to bestow executive powers to NEAJA advisor Pratap Adhikary and the NMEA (NEAJA Memorial Excellence Award) team in order to carry out necessary steps, including establish communications with Nepal coordinator Bharat Dutta Koirala and work closely with him, in a bid to nominating the NMEA winner for the year 2012. NMEA was established earlier this year to present to a Nepali journalist or a non-profit media organization working to uplift the rural causes in Nepal. The award was established in association with NEAJA Mid-West region Vice-President Shekhar Dhungel in memory of his late parents.

The meeting extended sincere thanks to Mr. Arun Bhattarai for actively and successfully coordinating the screening of Dashdhunga movie on June 26, 2011 on behalf of NEAJA. The screening of the movie helped generate US $ 845.00 in the NEAJA coffer. The meeting also extended its gratitude to all those individuals who helped make the movie screening event a success.
