Press Release
Washington DC, Sept. 22:

Preliminary meeting between Nepal America Journalists’ Association (NEAJA) and Freedom House was held in Washington DC on September 21.

The meeting was held in the pretext of exchanging ideas and forging an alliance between the two institutions for promoting press freedom in Nepal. In the map of press freedom-2011 charted by the Freedom House, Nepal falls under “Partially Press Free” country.

Welcoming the NEAJA delegation to the event, Robert Herman, director of the programs at the Freedom House, said the reason behind organizing the event was not just to get to know the Nepalese journalists working in the US but also to learn about the press freedom issues in Nepal and chart out if something could be done mutually.

Senior program officer Courtney Radsch highlighted the methodology as to how the study of the press freedom issues were carried out throughout the world.

“Since we can’t go everywhere, we love to meet visiting journalists from around the world while they stop by Washington DC and learn more about the issues,” Radsch said.

Jessie Cohn , Program Officer for South East Asia at the Freedom House in Washington DC said that the FH was working extensively in addressing the issue of religious rights of the minority religious communities in Indonesia and was launching IT policy in the high schools in Cambodia and was always willing to work for Nepal as well.

Presenting a working paper “NEAJA: Bridging Media Frontiers” on the occasion, acting president of NEAJA, Krishna Sharma highlighted the situation of press in Nepal and discussed the activities carried out by NEAJA in its bid to bridging the media frontiers.
