Basav Rajopadhyay will perform the Ihi Ceremony IHI is the most inevitable and ritual ceremony in Newah Society to retreat Newah girl at the age of 5-11 years old. IHI stands for a certain time and age. According to religious and astrological belief, IHI is an act of giving a virgin in marriage, but it is not a physical wedding. The main images at the wedding—provided separately for each girl—are the bya (in Nepali, bel ) which is the fruit of the Bel plant (Aegle marmelos ), and a small gold image (or flat piece of gold with an image engraved on it). The bya represents Siva; the image represents Vishnu/Narayana, also called Subarna Kumar. At the exact astrological time—called out by a Josi—the donor gives his daughter to the god as manifested by pressing her thumb against the golden image. The image is held against the bya representing Siva as the witness to the marriage. This occasion, therefore, popularly known as “IHI” (Belbibah). The principal behind this traditional value is that the girl having been married with human being, should her husband died during their career she is not considered “widowed” because she was married to Lord Subarna Kumar at her pre-pubescent year of age. It is done to prevent widowhood as whole life of newah woman. Thus the “IHI” ritual is the most important ongoing process prevalent in Newha Society.
