Presenting the Petition: Citizenship Through Mothers, Washington, DC, January 9, 2015,
12:30 AM

January 9, 2015: A month from the start of the petition on Citizenship in the Name of the Mother, which has collected more than two thousand signatories from over fifty countries, we, Washington-beltway-based supporters of this campaign, presented a copy of our petition to the representatives at the Embassy of Nepal in Washington on January 9, 2015.

Our demand in the petition is that Nepali citizenship be conferred through fathers ‘or’ mothers, rather than through fathers ‘and’ mothers, in Nepal’s new constitution. We believe that this is imperative to avoid multiple injustices, and to risk leaving up to 4.3 million Nepalis stateless.

There were five people present at this event. All members of the delegation signed the letter and submitted it along with the copy of the petition. On behalf of the Embassy, Mr. Rishi Ram Ghimire, Charge d’ Affairs a.i., ensured the delegates that he would forward the petition to the Speaker of the Constituent Assembly in Nepal via the diplomatic channel.

A number of speakers addressed the gathering. Subhash Nepali, Coordinator of the Movement in Washington, DC, spoke about the objectives of the movement. He explained that the campaign is led to ensure the Citizenship in the Name of the Mother in the new Constitution of Nepal. He stressed that any move to curtail women’s rights and withheld them from enjoying equal citizenship rights on any pretext is unacceptable. Mr. Shailendra Gupta, who worked for more than a decade with UNHCR in Nepal advocating the issues of statelessness, spoke about the obligation of Government of Nepal to international treaties in regards of equal rights of women that includes citizenship rights. Mr. Ghimire agreed that it is imperative of the Government of Nepal to grant women the equal rights.

The petition submission was wrapped up with a unanimous understanding that the new Constitution must ensure equal citizenship rights to women.
